Can you mix Laxatone with wet food?

My cat Benji is long haired and gets a TON of hairballs. I brush him every other day and have him on prescription sensitive stomach food, but he still coughs up 3-4 hairballs a week, usually after eating so he throws up his food with it. He comes to me and howls every time he throws up so I know he must be in pain or at least very distressed by it. Our vet recommended Laxatone gel, but Benji HATES it. I’ve tried mixing it with a squeeze tube treat but he refuses it. And I’ve tried putting it on his paws to lick it off, but that just leads to a sticky mess all over my furniture. I read online that mixing it with food can reduce the effectiveness, but I’m desperate. Does anyone have any advice?
