Harassed on a Zurich tram
Hey guys!
Just wanted to share my disgusting experience on a Zurich tram this evening.
I was on my way home from the cinema, I watched an amazing movie, albeit quite depressing. I was sitting on the tram and thinking about the movie, I guess my face looked a bit sad.
Then I saw two older men (see photo) who were staring at me. Once they saw that I saw them, they started making various gestures, like pointing at my legs (yeah, you can guess, I was wearing a short skirt, like 50% of the tram), and pulling up the corners of their mouth and telling me to smile. They were also aggressively laughing at their "joke".
At least this time I did not freeze but actually shouted back at them. They continued laughing at me and saying "are we criminals now or what?" (Original: "Sind wir Verbrecher jetzt oder wie??") Seemingly to signify that what they are doing is normal, not harassment, and I should just smile. I hope I managed to make them uncomfortable enough as they left the tram soon enough.
Shoutout to two very nice women on the tram who saw/heard what happened and supported me.
I don't know why I'm posting this, probably to show that sexual harassment does not equal young migrants, but very often comes from the demographic of male, entitled Swiss or German Herberts and Günthers. I have actually had multiple similar experiences in Zurich, and all of them came from old white men. It's horrifying to think that those two are someone's dads and grandpas.
