49 y/o F immobile within a year of diagnosis. TRIGGER WARNING- mentions death and injuries.

This is kind of a weird post. It is referring to my mum. Who is now passed as of March. She was diagnosed with osteoporosis just before turning 48 (so early 2023)...by April of '24 she was essentially completely immobile. She lost ~80lbs and became underweight quickly. Over time her back hunched severely, she broke multiple bones often; with at least 5 spinal fractures leading up to her passing. It was absolutely heartbreaking and mind blowing to see her fall apart so very quickly when she was seemingly so 'healthy' in comparison before. Mobile and energetic.

Her death was not result of this disease (I think). She was on hospice for end stage COPD and congestive heart failure. So unfortunately, I will never know what actually was the culprit. There's definitely a lack of closure there for me.

My point of this post are two things I guess:

  1. does it happen this way sometimes? I always thought this was a slower degenerative disease.
  2. I am 32. This may be an obvious question but is there some sort of preventative medicine or treatment I should be talking to my doctors about ? Admittedly I'm a bit medically negligent when it comes to myself. My great grandma also has this but she's 94 and still kickin' it pretty well. I just have 2 very young toddlers and I want to be around as long as possible for.
