French Toast question

I got a new (to me) Danelectro French Toast today off of eBay. The pedal doesn't look like it's been used much, if at all. The 9v battery is still wrapped in clear film. I placed at the front of the chain - compressor~~>French Toast~~>BD-2~~>etc. and it sounds great. But when I tap it off, I lose all signal to the amp. Kind of like it has no bypass.

What am I missing here? I will be thrilled if it's something stupid that I'm just overlooking.
