Aversion to breast and only likes bottle and only a specific nipple

Feeding

Hello new parents,

I would like to get some guidance and help to understand how do I let my new born baby girl take feedings from the breasts. Our baby was born 4 lbs 14 oz at 37w3d. The baby was in the NICU for a week due to less oxygen in post-ductal. During her NICU time, she was given bottle feeding and she got used to it. Since then, it has been almost a month and the mother has been trying to breast feed but the baby just hates being on the breast. She sometimes latches with a nipple shield but hardly takes a max of 10 ml per feeding.

We had been having lactation consultant appointments but the LC mentions that we should keep practising. We have been trying that but the baby just gets super tired from crying and sucking at the breast. She gets so much tired that she needs a full day rest the following day. As she is so tired the next day, she would not even latch and we again have to give her bottle through out the day so that she gets her food that day. With this one whole day of bottle feeding, she again forgets how did she latch to the breast previously and we are back to square one.

We need some guidance as to have to how can we wean her off the bottle gradually, not exhaust her and at least successfully latch and feed few millilitres every feeding?

Things we have done so far:

  • changed her bottle nipple to a nipple that mimics the breast. This exhausts her.
  • do a mix of bottle feeding where we change the nipples in between the feed so that she does not get exhausted. Meaning, we start her off with the nipple that mimics the breast, once we feel that she is getting tired, we change to the nipple she likes and then she takes the feed.

Thank you in advance.
