OT said she understands my autism because she has ADHD

General Discussion/Question

I started occupational therapy for the first time, and the therapist seemed very tone deaf. First, it felt like closet ABA therapy, which as a 46yo woman is not what I need. I know how to blend in and mask…that’s why I’m here. Second, the ADHD comment bugged me because even though many people have both, they are not very similar at all.

For instance, my brother has ADHD and he is married with kids and has had the same best friends since the first day of school. I on the other hand, have no friends and can’t be in a relationship, and have sensory issues that make leaving the house difficult.

Does anyone else feel like ADHD isn’t as bad as autism? It seems much more socially acceptable to blame things on ADHD than autism. If people at work found out I had autism I know I would be discriminated against.
