Fiction Book about a 70s cult

Does anybody know about this book, I used to be friends with a girl who read it but I don’t know her anymore so can’t find out the name. I know it was to do with some cult I think in California and I think in the 70s and maybe there was something to do with a realtor being involved ? I don’t remember enough detail to look it up so hope that’s enough for someone to catch on
