How do I tell my fiancé that I don’t like my ring?

Advice

I (20F) got engaged to my fiancé (20M) 6 months ago. The proposal was perfect and he picked out a beautiful ring with the help of my sister. We had not talked before about my taste in rings or a budget, but we had talked about getting engaged before moving into our house, which was happening in February. It was a surprise but not completely unexpected.

The ring he picked was around $2000 and has a simple criss-cross band with a garnet as the main stone. He picked it because it is my birth stone and he couldn’t afford a high quality diamond with the custom band at the moment. I love the ring and the thoughtfulness behind it, but I hate that the main stone is red.

All of the other jewelry and accessories I have are either silver, black, or white so they will match with anything I wear. Every phone, purse, and bracelet is a neutral color. I asked him why he didn’t choose moissanite or another white stone, and he said he liked the red better.

I briefly started this conversation and mentioned not liking that the red doesn’t match everything, and he seemed pretty hurt and told me he picked it out because he thought it was my favorite color and because it was my birth stone. I just wish he would’ve asked me as I would’ve preferred a solitaire ring with a single stone, and that may have been in budget.

Now it’s been 6 months that I’ve left it alone and I still get sad every time I look at it. What do I do?
