When are these companies going to acknowledge that the gaming market has been oversaturated for at least a decade?
One of the biggest issues with game sales not performing as expected is simply due to the fact that the market is oversaturated with good/great games. It makes it more difficult to justify buying a new game when there’s endless backlogs of other games that are just as fun to play. In fact, I’ve only seen this sentiment about backlogs increasing, year after year. Backlogs were only a thing discussed among the most enthusiast of gamers, but now backlogs seems to be one of the most common threads of discussion between gamers.
And it’s not even newer games entering backlogs, it’s the resurgence of classic titles from decades prior that have had new lights shone on them over the last few years. Not to mention the deluge of remastered/remakes for the last five years have only accelerated this problem.
A lot of these companies who make AAA titles are not only competing amongst each other, they’re competing with still-relevant live service games like Fortnite, and classic/retro games, AND a huge swath of decent and great indie titles. There’s just so much out there, that even if companies were to stop making new games to sell to us, we would have enough great games to last us for decades to come.
