I had to really rework the design for this one and had to let the environment of the model do a lot of the storytelling for the model. The official 4e art just doesn’t tell viewers much of anything about the creature, though I DID come across some other reference images that may or may not be official. I liked the vaguely bio mechanical, unearthly looks of them and tried to lean into that. I also showed up the lore again to bring it back into line with the consistency of the larger lore and to make it more internally consistent, because the 4e write up was really conflicting and left a lot of questions unanswered. I tied them to Graz’zt, since many of the more “successful” Abyssal cities are in his domain, and gave them a bit of a scandalous outfit to match their ties to him. I censored it a little for the version I shared to the community library, but you can see the “director’s cut” as it were in the later slides. Lore is below, as always!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When the culture of a city on the Prime Material Plane has irreparably fallen to lawlessness, chaos, evil, and depravity, the lines between the planes can blur and tendrils of the Abyss’ influence can seep through, leaving an opening just big enough for a singular Demon to step through. Such Demons are the Evanissu, or the City Corruptors. Portents of a land and people’s final downfall into oblivion, Evanissu are not punishments for a people’s wickedness; they are merely inevitable, opportunistic consequences.

Whereas the Skurchur Demons serve Fraz-Urb’luu and prey upon nobility, kings, and other authority figures or leaders, Evanissu serve Graz’zt and his ends. As such, the two castes of Demons despise one another and have extremely bitter rivalries which dwarf the already pronounced possessiveness which Evanissu exhibit towards cities they have claimed as “theirs”. To fully engulf a city in mayhem and to seed the causes of its total downfall is a matter of the utmost pride for these already arrogant and charismatic Demons.

While their skills of manipulation and their capacity to encourage stochastic terror, paranoia, misery, and hopelessness would be wasted in the Abyss and make them relatively weak in regards to other Demons, Evanissu’s powers are all too effective and persuasive where mortals are concerned. As such, they quickly amass staggering networks of underlings from across crime syndicates, assassins’ guilds, various evil religions and Demon cults, serial murders, lycanthropes, the undead, vampires, and other spreaders of pestilence and fear. As such, while no Evanissu is given to facing direct combat unless absolutely necessary, their retinues of minions make them formidable both on the Prime Material and elsewhere. However, when faced with direct hostility, an Evanissu will make themself a slippery and difficult target to hit, becoming incorporeal and teleporting frequently, then attacking from the shadows with fierce and jagged makeshift daggers crafted from bones of their most savored earlier victims.

Upon first arriving in a mortal city, an Evanissu will first target the most disenfranchised and powerless, picking off victims that the local governance and the populace are unlikely to notice have gone missing. Then they will sow disease and other societal ills, stirring up culture wars by maneuvering scapegoats into the spotlight and by casting rulers unfavorably to the underprivileged. Their criminal networks will further inflame matters, and the cultists they’ve gathered will subsume those looking for power or easy answers. Then, and only then, will an Evanissu enact their master stroke and magnum opus: sucking a city into the Abyss entirely and adding it to one of Graz’zt’s realms.

GIven their immense threat to mortal settlements, rooting out Evanissu can be a top priority for Clerics, Paladins, and other clergy from nearby cities, especially if fear of the moral corruption spreading is substantiated and warranted. However, sleuthing out an Evanissu’s true location and identity can be difficult, as they are wily shapeshifters prone to disguising their true forms and to hiding behind lieutenants and expendable allies. A campaign to apprehend and slay an Evanissu can take months to years, and there is no guarantee that a determined Evanissu will not return later, even if doing so takes centuries.
