How I Stopped Forcing Trades and Finally Found Consistency
One of the fastest ways to stall out as a trader (or blow up entirely) is forcing trades that aren’t there. You’ve done it. I know I have. We all have lol. You’re sitting in front of your screen, nothing’s really happening, your plan hasn’t triggered but you feel like you have to do something. So you press that buy or sell button. You convince yourself a setup exists.
Early on, I traded just to feel something. Before I got into options, I used to trade political markets, highly volatile, headline driven stuff. A leaked poll or tweet could move things 100% in minutes, LITERALLY. It was chaos, and I loved it. But it trained my brain to think that movement meant opportunity. I started confusing noise with signal.
When I transitioned into options, especially 0DTE, I brought that same energy. I’d convince myself there was a setup because I wanted one not because the chart showed one. I’d find a random level, size up without thinking, then bail at the first red candle.
It wasn’t trading. It was reacting. Fidgeting. Twitch trading.
The results were exactly what you’d expect. Inconsistent, stressful, and emotionally exhausting. I always tell people: if you treat the market like a casino, it will treat you like a gambler.
I eventually realized the problem wasn’t the market. It was me.
The market doesn’t owe you a trade. It owes us nothing. This was a huge mental shift. You’re not paid to take trades, you’re paid to wait! You’re paid to sit on your hands until the right setup shows up. Sometimes that takes an hour. Sometimes it takes days. Sometimes it doesn’t come at all for weeks!
But here’s the reality. Cash is a position. Patience is a weapon. You are not obligated to act just because the market is open. Even now, with SPY offering several potential moves a day, I’ll sit out if I don’t see what I’m looking for.
Here’s what a clean setup looks like for me:
- Price is at a key level. Not “near” ....right on it.
- Volume is building into the level. I want to see energy, not random chop.
- Order flow confirms. I want to see delta shift, absorption, or signs of trapped buyers/sellers.
- I know my stop and target before I enter. No improvising.
If any of those aren’t in place, I don’t take the trade. It’s that simple. Because forcing a weak setup is far more damaging than missing a great one. I’ve learned that the hard way multiple times, probably far more times than most of you. I was thick headed for many years. Making the same mistakes over and over. And yes, I still slip up occasionally. We all do.
One mental trick that helps is the Reversal Test. If I’m about to take a trade and I feel that itch to enter, I ask myself: “If price moved hard against my bias right now, would I be surprised?”
If the honest answer is yes then I’m not reading the market. I’m projecting. And when you’re projecting, you’re not trading with clarity. You’re trading your own hopes. That’s how losses pile up.
Not trading doesn’t mean doing nothing.
On days I don’t trade, I’m still working. I’m watching how price reacts to my levels. I’m taking screenshots and logging patterns. I’m reading order flow with no position on which actually helps me see things more clearly. I’m journaling. I’m refining.
Most traders don’t do that kind of work. They only “practice” when money’s on the line. If you do the opposite, you give yourself a real edge over time.
I used to think more trades meant more progress. But that mindset kept me stuck. I didn’t need more action I needed more clarity. The moment I stopped pressing buttons just to feel busy and started demanding confirmation before acting, things changed.
You don’t need more trades. You need better trades. That starts with structure, patience, and a refusal to force what isn’t there.
The market will give you a green light eventually. Wait for it. Until then, protect your capital. Sharpen your edge. Let everyone else chase noise.
You’re not here to gamble. You’re here to grow!!!
