Going to USA for a week with an expiring US passport

I might need to go back to USA for week this weekend and am trying to figure out what to do. I am currently living in Spain on a workers visa that will end next year, but my US passport is ending in August. From what I understand I will not be able to go there and return with this passport, since I need it to be functional after three months that my visa expires. I know I can do an Urgent passport here in Barcelona. Is this different to a normal passport? Also would I be able to return with it? If there is a better community to ask please let me know. Thanks
