Inferred cryptids

Allegedly, Darwin deducted the exitence of Darwin's hawk moth from the structure of an orquid, also we theorize that the reason for the pronghorn's speed is because of the american cheetah, are there any examples of cryptids inferred from a vacant ecologycal niche?
