Looking for an EDC backpack + travel + occasional hikes

Question

Hello all!

I'm on the hunt for a backpack that I can buy once and it'll last me for a good while for the majority of my needs.

I'm in need of a backpack that can accommodate my university student needs:

  • carrying a 15.6 laptop,
  • carrying logbooks, tablets,
  • carrying random small bits (circuit boards, cables, pens)

Additionally I want this backpack to be good for travelling. Previous backpacks I've had have always been either a mess to pack and organise, or haven't had enough volume, and/or other issues with just their design. I do want it to fit in cabin luggage spaces (even if it requires brute force to fit it).

Previous backpacks have had this volume issue. The current one I have I believe is somewhere around 20L? So something bigger is preferable though hopefully still being small enough to be good for backpacking around the world.

An additional extra use would be for hikes, I understand usually these have special structures to help with carrying weight. However if it can hold bits for travel I should be able to deal with it for these hikes. However, in this case I'm additionally looking for some sort of mounting points or something where if I want to use some rope, carabiners, or clips, to attach extra bits (bags, sleeping mats, bottles) on easily then that's possible and easy to do.

Let me know your thoughts, and any other bits I might want to consider. Thank you!
