How to I transition out of the SES to private or non-profit sectors?

Hey all. Could use some input on transitioning from what I had assumed to be my life-long career. I am a relatively young (~40) member of the Senior Executive Service in the DC area looking to transition out of the Federal government. My background is in administration and resource allocation (not finance) and I currently run an office of about 60 people. Basically, I don’t choose where the trains go but I do my best to make sure they have the resources to get there.

I am having trouble translating my federal experience into the private or non-profit sectors and would appreciate hearing about the experiences of others who have moved on from SES roles to outside the government.
