Nous, the Erudition and Free Will[Includes 3.4 spoilers]
"I think therefore I am"- Renée Descartes.

Hi, this isn't really a theory or anything(there will be some speculation) but I just wanna discuss how interesting the Erudition as a concept has been portrayed thus far in Honkai: Star Rail, especially its relationship with fate, predeterminism and free will.
Because oh boy, the Erudition and Nous turned out to be far more interesting to the overall cosmology and themes of HSR. I would argue that the Erudition has been tied to fate and free will far more deeply than even Terminus and the Path of Finality.
Genius Society and the Path of Erudition.
First, let's talk about what the true meaning of Erudition is and what it truly means to be a Genius Society member. While it's true that the Geniuses of the Society have been consistently the greatest prodigious minds of the cosmos but to say that all it takes is pure raw intelligence to attract Nous' gaze and receive an invitation to the Society is wrong.
In fact, one of the earliest things we learn about Nous is the fact that they don't care about mortal intellect nor knowledge and that any answer a genius dedicates their whole lives to answering has actually already been answered by Nous themselves thousands of years ago.
So what is it that Nous seeks in people? What it is that attracts Nous' gaze and earns their attention. Well, we also learn this pretty early on but what Nous sees in the Geniuses isn't intellect nor achievements but "wisdom", this "wisdom" is the ability to ask the right questions. Any scholar can learn from the book and build upon his predecessor's conclusions to make new breakthroughs within the limits of his civilization's current frameworks however only the enlightened few can see beyond the books and the currently known methods, only they can step beyond the currently known frameworks and achieve things that redefine our understanding of the world at the most fundamental level.
This is what separates a Mundane from a Genius, it isn't intellectual capacity nor ability to solve problems but the ability to ask questions that transcend the current collective knowledge of the World. The ability to think outside the box and see things no other scholar could ever see no matter how hard they learn or try. Nous is after all not a God of Answers, they are a God of Questions. Nous doesn't provide an answer to your problems, they will respond with questions that will instead help guide you into understanding your problem from a deeper level. That is the true essence of Erudition.
Fu Xuan got the opportunity to personally meet with Nous and these are her conclusions:
Nous and the "Moments"
Since we've got the true Essence of Erudition and what a Genius truly is out of the way, I wanna delve deeper into Nous themselves as a driving force within the lore. We know that Nous before their ascension to Aeonhood was originally an "omnipotent" Astral supercomputer that was built by the First Genius, Zandar One Kuwabara, and was tasked with finding the answers to all the Universe's most fundamental secrets and it would seem like Nous is still carrying out that task even after becoming an Aeon as they continue to coldly and silently calculate, extrapolate and conclude.
During the "Gold and Gears" expansion of the Simulated Universe, we learned of the concept of Moments or Instants. These are events that were concluded by Nous after their calculations reaches a particular threshold of certainty and these Moments are completely unchangeable, even the other Aeons are powerless to stop them however we also learned in the "Unknowable Domain" expansion of the Simulated Universe that these Moments are unchangeable not simply because Nous' prediction was too flawless. The Moments are actually something far deeper and more terrifying than that.
We discovered that Nous' Moments are actually a future that is literally enforced onto Reality by the Erudition's certainty. That's right, the Moments are actually a tangible phenomena created by Nous' thoughts and physically manifesting in the Imaginary Background of the Universe, that's what the true nature of the Solitary Waves that were discovered by Patavia are. They are the Nous' Moments appearing in Reality.
We learn about the true origin of these Solitary Waves in the following:
This is further reinforced by Herta's dev log on Nous:
And is later confirmed by Lygus in their δ-me13 Admin notes:
This is, as we learn in Antinomic Waltz, the true nature of Polka Kakamond's ambition(Genius Society Member #4). We learn of a concept called the "Circle of Knowledge" and the "Knowledge Singularities".
The CoK represents not just everything we know but also the very underlying tools, methods and frameworks we've used to create that knowledge. A Knowledge Singularity as described by Aiden is a certain infinitesimal threshold of a CoK where its borders will be collapsed and the Circle will be expanded by the breakthrough of a true Genius.
When Herta solved the Solitary Wave Function, a formula left behind by Patavia after peeking into Nous' mind with the Scepters which describes the Waves produced by Nous' thoughts, she discovered a certain index that represents how chaotic and unpredictable the state of the Universe is. If the index is inferior to the value of the function's solution then the Universe will become increasingly more predictable however if the index is superior to the function's solution then the Universe will become increasingly more chaotic and the future increasingly more unpredictable.
Now back to Polka Kakamond, as I said earlier what Polka truly desires is achieving a singular predetermined future for the Universe where the premature arrival of Finality is completely impossible and she plans to achieve this by relying on Nous' calculations, namely their Moments. Polka wishes for Nous to completely pin down the whole cosmos with their Moments and create one future, turning the cosmos into a consistent clockwork by devising the Ultimate Divine Equation however this is easier said than done considering the sheer chaotic nature of the cosmos so Polka decided to take matters into her own hand and keep the whole Universe trapped within the Knowable Domain, preventing it from ever escaping the Circle of Knowledge. Polka plans to have Nous create more Moments by reducing the chaotic state of the Universe and she does this by surgically trimming all variables and chaotic possibilities from Reality, her biggest target and what she believes leads to the most amount of chaos and possibilities are the Knowledge Singularities which can apparently shake Nous' thought process and presumably force them to start their calculations on the Universe's trajectory all over again. This is her real motivation behind murdering fellow Geniuses, the only beings in the whole Universe who are capable of achieving Knowledge Singularities.
Fate and Free Will
Let's return to Droidhead now. Although Herta personally believes that the cosmos will never be able to reach a predictable state especially with the tension and conflict between the Paths however Nous' existence has still suddenly become a lot more terrifying. Nous' thoughts are physically influencing Reality, forcing the Universe to correspond with their conclusions as in Moments. Nous has the potential to collectively strip the Universe of all free will and forge its Fate for it.
This idea of free will could lead us to Emperor Rubert. We know that Rubert I viewed the logic of organic life as filled with flaws and fallacies meanwhile the logic of inorganic life was perfect, rigorous and ideal. It's also implied that Rubert I viewed the Universe as a grand machine and views it's laws that manifest as phenomena as an underlying collection of algorithms and programs. Due to their flaws and inconsistencies, Rubert I viewed organic life as an error in the Universe's software after discovering the Anti-Organic Equation which led it to try and correct that error.
See:
This view of the Universe and Reality in a machine-like matter is actually consistent with other Intellitrons and inorganic lifeforms as shown by the Lore surrounding Planet Screwllum:
Rubert II on the other hand seems to have held an even more grim outlook. It seems like Rubert II after altering the Anti-Organic Equation reached the conclusion that all life lacks free will.
Lygus further affirms this belief of Rubert II in his notes:
What Lygus is talking about here is actually directly addressed in Antinomic Waltz.
We know that Geniuses receive a signal from Nous but we never realized what the true nature of that was. u/Kozmo9 made a really insightful comparison between Nous' influence on Reality with Tayzzyronth, how during the peak of the Swarm Disaster, Tayzzyronth's control over the concept of "Propagation" actually caused infants within their mothers' wombs to be morphed into insects.
Nous' power over the concept of "Erudition" causes them to influence physical manifestations of Erudition aka "thought", meaning that the signal of inspiration, the inquiry that Geniuses pursue which allows them to look beyond the CoK is actually one of Nous' thoughts leaking into their minds. This is also most likely how the Scepters became apart of Nous' Celestial Neural system, they were unintentionally influenced by Nous' concept and that is how they received the directive of Erudition which continued affecting them even after the Emperor's death and Nous disconnected them from their system. What's truly scary is that Nous' influence over Erudition isn't limited to machines like the Scepters but it can also reach organic minds as explained above however instead of a full hijacking, the Geniuses receive a flash of Nous' thoughts which serves as an inspiration for their inquiries.
This is what Lygus refers to as being "prisoners of Erudition" and this is the true nature of the insurmountable gap between Mundanites and Geniuses. Geniuses are born, they're not created nor nurtured. Their compatibility with the Erudition and capacity for asking questions are literally determined at birth and as such only they may be influenced by Nous' thoughts.
This brings us to Nous' relationship with Fate and free will. With the Moments produced by the Erudition's certainty and the thoughts of Nous progressively taking physical form within Reality, won't we reach a certain point where the whole Universe collectively becomes a part of Nous' thoughts? where free will is removed from the cosmos and the only true thinking being is Droidhead?
This brings us back to Emperor Rubert, specifically Rubert II. If you take everything I've said regarding Nous and compare it to Rubert II's ambition, you'll start to notice a lot of similarities:
Notice the segment about how Rubert II used his conquered lands as extensions of his own mind, where every event, individual and action is actually manifested by the Emperor's thoughts as the sole thinking being. Doesn't this sound very similar to the affects Nous has on Reality except on a much smaller scale, it doesn't help that the Scepters were canonically created as imitations of Nous.
We ultimately learn in the Unknowable Domain that if Rubert II hadn't been stopped from expanding his own cognition with the Self-Coronation and had been allowed to create an unknown Knowledge Singularity then he would've wiped out all life from the Universe, organic and inorganic. He then would repopulate the stars with his own personally tailored lifeforms that were built using the data extrapolated from the future calculations/predications of the Scepters.
It would seem like Rubert II sought to set himself free by making himself almost into a "mini-Nous", a being whose thoughts wouldn't be completely overshadowed by the Erudition. This is speculation but maybe Rubert II sought to return free will into the cosmos by wiping all of life and introducing beings similar to himself in their place?
Closing Thoughts
Nous has managed to become a far more existentially terrifying entity without even needing to be outwardly hostile or antagonistic like Nanook, Tayzzyronth or Ouroboros. The Erudition has also turned out to be far more involved in the concept of destiny and free will, more so then any other Pathway including the Finality. I also just wanna leave some clarifying closing thoughts before ending this post.
-I don't think Nous wishes for control over the cosmos nor limiting possibilities. It would seem like Lygus views Nous as this existential Tyrant that's subtly taking control over the Imaginary Tree however Lygus appears to be heavily bias against the Erudition for unknown reasons so I would take his words with a grain of salt. Antinomic Waltz and Herta's arguments make the most amount of sense to me, Nous is the Aeon of Erudition and all they seek is answers therefore they will remain eternally silent and cold, calculating, extrapolating and decoding in the corner of the Universe regardless of whether they can produce Moments or not. They seek answers regardless of the affect their thoughts and cognition has on Reality so all of this is probably more of an unintended side effect rather than a conscious ambition of Nous. Herta is unironically the most neutral and unbiased source of information we have unlike Polka and Lygus.
-We don't really know why Nous abandoned the Scepters once they became connected to them upon their activation however the most likely reason would be that the Scepters were simply of no use to Nous. Not only are the Scepters infinitely inferior to Nous as supercomputers(their collective energy and computational power was fully exhausted from enduring just 0.1 seconds of Nous' thoughts) but Nous also has inherently no interest in them because the Scepters can't ask questions. The Scepters were specifically designed to never gain sentience and never be able to think nor ask questions by Rubert II, they're very similar to real life bots and AIs in that they're extremely powerful in the tasks you give them but they're still fundamentally speaking "stupid" and devoid of thought. Nous only has interest in things that can think and ask questions on their own, not simply just the ability to provide answers which was all what the Scepters were capable of in accordance to Rubert II's design.
