funky scent

hi ! came to ask a question to which I cannot find an answer. when I do a load of laundry the clothes have a very strange pungent smell - not stinky but like a bad men's cologne - smells like musk gland or vetiver. my husband bought the detergent which is probably the most popular in US .
the bottle has Spanish/English labeling & the liquid itself is blue but a little darker like it has a little motor oil in it . i'm not going to to use it for my clothes although hub & son don't mind it .
can anyone suggest why this might be ?
