I'm glad the game ended the way it did (and why I'm worried about the movie)
I'm glad the game ended the way it did: with two very different choices.
They are on extreme ends of a dilemma, and clearly people have just as extreme opinions on them (not that there isn't a place for nuance). It's pretty clear just a few minutes into any comment section, be it Reddit, Facebook or even YouTube that people feel so strongly about their preferred ending that it seems like perhaps being stuck with the other one would sour the experience for them. Maybe I'm just projecting, but I must confess I do feel that way as well. I will not say the ending I picked is perfect; it's not even meant to be, but I do vastly prefer it over the other and if I was stuck with the other one my opinion on the game would tank, and I'm glad it didn't because I have this choice.
Now comes the part I'm worried about, the upcoming movie that was announced. The statements here make it sound like it'll be an adaptation instead of perhaps a story from the world like I was hoping.
“Partnering with Story Kitchen allows us to expand the universe of ‘Clair Obscur’ beyond the gaming realm,” said Sandfall Interactive’s CEO/Creative Director, Guillaume Broche. “Their expertise in storytelling and passion for our vision make them the perfect team to translate our game into a captivating film.”
And I think that sucks.
Relegating this story to one of two particular endings is going to take the agency away from a huge chunk of the playerbase. We don't choose our ending just based on the content present in the story but the way we interpret them. People pick the same ending for different reasons and even with the same reasons, varying levels of conviction. With a set ending, unless it's a hodgepodge of both options or something completely new, this may seriously damage the discourse surrounding the game.
I guess we'll just have to put our faith in Sandfall and wait.
