How much of an improvement (if at all) is the 2nd to 3rd gen in terms of general reliability?
My 2010 got totaled by a drunk driver before I even hit like 2 months with it, and as much as I loved it, it honestly surprised me with the amount of stuff that landed it in the repair shop in my short time of owning it. Some of it was wear and tear from a neglectful past owner but there were other more uncommon problems as well.
I just got a 2014 grand touring hatchback w/117k miles and a somewhat decent maintenance history because I am not ready to move on from Mazda and specificially Mazda3s after just 2 months and love it so far in terms of looks and liked the idea of upgrading to the newer Skyactiv engine.
But I can't help but feel pretty scared that I'm going to run into issues again given my experience with the 2010. I know Mazda started seeing huge improvements in this generation partly thanks to parting with Ford, but how much of an improvement in your guys opinion?
Ideally I would want this car to last to 175k miles over the span of next four years and I would baby this thing to help it get there.
