OWC Thunderbolt 5 & OWC Thunderbolt 3 docks. Sweet.
I have seen a bunch of posts on this subject, I have a 2024 Macbook pro 16in M4pro; and wanted to get the best monitors for my needs. Im a software engineer so ultimately a lot of the data is irrelevant for just that. I decided to see what the best external setup for running Acer Nitro Ultrawide 34in curved monitors.
(They were on super sale for referbed units. Less than $200 - I bought 4 for myself and no problems..)
I already had a OWC Thunderbolt 3 14 port unit I have had for a few years, and based on not needing anything other than Thunderbolt 5 connections, I bought the OWC Thunderbolt 5 dock which is mostly are for my external monitors (and anything I might need later TB5 wise.
I just finished with my installation, and I have my Macbook 16in Pro M4 pro laptop and connected one TB 5 port to the host side on the OWC TB5 dock, and the others to my 2 4K Acer Nitro 34in curved ultrawide and ran some tests, was shocked.
Running UFO test, I get a best of 190fps, 188hz refresh on both. I had no Idea that would jump so far from HMDI to changing to TB5 to the monitors. Looks fantastic. I know Apple publishes that 2 external 4K monitors will be limited to 60Hz, which using an HDMI cable to the laptop was the published specs. Just thought that while prices are so cheap, I would try it out and am happy that I did.
Monitor:
TB 5 Cable, they are selling the Displayport to TB5 cable for $9, I bought some of those too.
