I tested giving away a tiny digital file for free here’s what actually happened
Been lurking here a while so I thought I’d share something small I tried.
I make AI prompt packs for fun nothing fancy, just stuff that helps me write faster.
A few weeks ago, instead of trying to sell them directly, I made a tiny free version and put it up on Gumroad. No paid ads, no upsells just to see if anyone would care.
Posted some practical tips on Reddit,Threads etc. (not “buy this”literally just tips people could use).
The weird part? The free version got way more traction than any “paid” thing I’ve posted before.
A few lessons: • People like trying before buying. • Free stuff spreads more easily if it’s genuinely useful. • If you lead with value, you get real feedback.
Not trying to get rich overnight, but it’s fun to see something so small get 100+ downloads basically while I sleep.
Curious if anyone here has done this with other digital stuff ebooks, templates, checklists? Did it lead to paid sales eventually or just freebie hunters forever?
Genuinely curious how you’d scale this up. Open to ideas. Really appreciate any thoughts or feedback in advance!
