Animal Facts
Male seahorses get pregnant, but that’s not even the crazy part — they also experience contractions and go into labor, pushing out up to 2,000 fully-formed babies… sometimes overnight.
Here’s how it works: female seahorses deposit their eggs into a special pouch on the male’s belly (think of it like a reverse pregnancy). The father then fertilizes the eggs inside his body and carries them for several weeks, controlling things like salinity, oxygen, and even hormones — just like a mammalian womb.
When it’s go-time, the male has intense muscular contractions and "gives birth" through a small opening in the pouch — sometimes for hours, writhing and contorting while hundreds of tiny seahorses shoot out into the water like popcorn.
It might sound like a Pixar fever dream, but this fully functional role reversal has been happening in oceans for millions of years.
