Doctors refusing to do surgery - should I still insist?
Hi! I'm 21F and I'm Nigerian African (just in case that's relevant for an informed answer) . I've struggled with keloids pretty much my entire life, starting from when I got the chicken pox. I have two keloids on my crotch. One is quite big and thick and the other is small, but I can feel getting tougher. The one that is bigger was first removed by cauterzation at my GP. This was obviously a relief bc it was initially so large that it stuck out when I wore leggings or trousers that were tight on the groin area. Also accidentally grazing it hurt so bad. This was almost a year ago and while it hasn't grown to the same height that it was last year, it has expanded quite a lot and is very fibrous.
My GP has tried steroid injections but because it's quite tough it's difficult to get much fluid in. My GP told me that perhaps if I get surgery, healthy skin can be pushed together and with a combined treatment of patches and injections, the scar can be controlled. When I got my dermatologist appointment I asked for surgery and follow up injections and they said that no matter what I do after surgery, the keloid will just get bigger. I explained what my GP said and they insisted it won't work no matter how diligent I am with scar care after surgery.
For now, they have tried steroid injections, which the dermatologist explained is more so a tester and that in September they'll review. I've been prescribed a duoderm cream and been given two silicone patches in the mean time to see if that will "soften" the tissue.
My question is, should I insist on surgery on my next appointment? Have any of yoy had experience with surgery followed up with injections and patches and did it help your case? They seemed very dismissive and not willing to consider what I can do after surgery. I don't claim to know better than a doctor but I do wonder if it's worth pushing? Please let me know your experiences.
