Migrating a Magical Delicacy xbox game pass save file to steam
Magical Delicacy is leaving game pass (sad), but worry not! You can convert your xbox game pass savefile to steam.
Instructions
- Find your xbox game pass save file. On my machine, it was stored here:
%appdata%/../Local/Packages/WhitethornDigital.MagicalDelicacy_wm90jk67xa6wg/SystemAppData/wgs/Note that WhitethornDigital.MagicalDelicacy_wm90jk67xa6wg may be different on your machine (?), so you might have to search%appdata%/../Local/Packagesfor something that saysWhitethornDigital.MagicalDelicacy. Once you've found this folder, there should be a folder calledtand another folder called something likexxxxF4E93xxxx_000000000000000000000000750xxx9E(exact text redacted because this might be your xbox account id or something?). Inside, there should be acontainers.indexand one folder for each save file you have in the game. These are assigned unique ids, not numbers, so determining which save file is which is difficult. - Disable steam autocloud (Magical Delicacy in steam library (right click) -> properties -> 'Keep game's saves in the Steam Cloud for Magical Delicacy -> switch off)
- Launch Magical Delicacy on steam and create a new save. You can save and quit while still in the tutorial
- Find steam save file location, should be located here:
%appdata%\..\LocalLow\Skaule\MagicalDelicacy\SAVE. You should have a save folder1inside here, that is your save file. Unlike xbox, they are nicely numbered. - Migrate the contents of the save from the xbox format to the steam format (requires a little deduction unfortunately...). Detailed instructions on how to migrate the save files are below:
Luckily, the format of the save files are JSON, not binary (with a couple of exceptions), so you can just open the files in any text editor to inspect their contents. There are 8 important files, and in the steam format they are called characters.magical, collections.magical, conditions.magical, levels.magical, metrics.magical, progression.magical, store.magical, and system.magical. In the xbox format, there are a couple of extra files. Two of them are in binary, and luckily you can ignore them. A third extra file is just game settings, which seem to be stored somewhere else in the steam game, but they are irrelevant to the save.
Delete the .magical files in the steam save folder, then copy all the xbox save files into the folder. Delete the two binary files (will look like garbage when opened in a text editor). We will now go through and rename the remaining files to restore your save.
characters.magical: should contain keys such as DH_LastDialogues and DH_History, then a bunch of stuff for characters that you have met.
collections.magical: should contain key UnlockedGuideEntries, then information about your inventory, wares, recipes, etc.
conditions.magical: should contain key KeyConditions.
levels.magical: should contain a bunch of keys that have dtevent in the name, like H2_Harbor_player_dtevent_22.
metrics.magical: should contain keys Statistics and StatisticsFloat.
progression.magical: should contain keys that have Discovered_ at the beginning, like Discovered_Ingredients, then a bunch of keys that have Player_ at the beginning, like Player_RecipeManager_created, along with some other stuff.
store.magical: should contain keys Layout_CurrentModules, Layout_Available, Market_ForSale, and a bunch of other information about your store and garden.
system.magical: contains keys like ActiveScene, and PlayerLocation, along with a bunch more metadata about the state of the world, like time of day, game versions, weather, etc.
Once you've found and renamed the above files, delete any remaining files from xbox then launch the game! Hopefully you can now play your world intact. If anything is off, just try pasting in the data again.
