My mother went on a risky trip when pregnant, during which my godmother groomed a teenage boy and "adopted" him as her son, and my mother and family is covering it up.
I recently found out something incredibly disturbing about a family trip that happened before I was born: and the way my family is handling it is crazy-making.
In July 1998, my mother traveled to Yangon, Myanmar, in her third trimester with my godmother. The official story was that this was an impulsive last-minute trip, but so much about this trip doesn’t add up: Myanmar was under military junta rule and deeply politically unstable, malaria was endemic (my mother also didn't take antimalarials during this trip!), there was a major dengue outbreak, and healthcare/medevac/consular services were severely limited.
It appears to be one of the most dangerous countries they could have visited in Asia, and possibly in the world at the time. My mother lived in Singapore at the time, which was politically stable and had an even better healthcare system than the US.
Here’s where it gets truly weird though: my godmother planned to “adopt” her boyfriend on the trip to get him US citizenship. The issue with this is that the boyfriend was a local teenage boy, as confirmed by my father, who was apparently their tour guide throughout the trip (both my mother and godmother were in their 30s at the time, btw). Despite clear language that implies the adoption was complete (this boyfriend was referred to as an "adopted son," and my mother's comments about "preparing for his arrival"), my mother implies that it was simply a plan that was never carried out to adopt this child.
Other aspects of this that don't make sense:
- Myanmar doesn't allow intercountry adoption, and the military junta was corrupt enough that they could have simply paid an immigration official a bribe and gotten the child/boyfriend out easily.
- Automatic US citizenship through adoption didn't exist until 2001. Adopting him wouldn't have gotten him any closer to citizenship.
- The trip was 7-10 days long; how did my godmother fall in love with this teenager so quickly and decide to adopt him in this bizarre immigration scheme?
When I asked my father about it, his response was even more disturbing. He admitted that my godmother was romantically involved with this boy and launched into a bizarre rant about how modern consent laws are “evolutionarily inconsistent,” even implying that it was “imperialistic” for me to impose my discomfort with this “relationship” on a “developing culture,” where cultural mores about the age of consent are different. He also downplayed the risk posed by travelling to Myanmar without taking antimalarials as a comparable risk to "crossing the road."
It disturbs me deeply that my family is downplaying this and may have aided and abetted it, or that this story is a cover for an even creepier story. I have a suspicion that my mother was more deeply involved in this "adoption." She is incredibly slippery when asked about this situation, which my father explains as her discomfort in finding out that her friend/my godmother was romantically involved with a teenager who she genuinely believed she was trying to adopt, however something about that doesn't ring true.
These are my questions:
- Why did my mother go on such a dangerous trip at 7 months pregnant if it wasn’t absolutely essential? This I think implies to me that she may have been more involved in this creepy story than she lets on.
- Did she know what was really happening and choose to look the other way?
- Why is everyone so okay with something that feels so obviously predatory?
TL;DR: My mom traveled to Myanmar while 7 months pregnant on a sketchy trip where my godmother tried to "adopt", and was actually "dating", a teenage tour guide, and my family is disturbingly okay with it.
