How to prepare a cask for aging?

I recently picked up a five gallon cask that was used to first age whiskey, then maple syrup. It then sat for a few months sealed before I picked it up. I want to age a batch of mead in this, but is any preparation necessary first? Should I rinse the inside with Star San first? Or is it OK to use as it is?
