Is the military scholarship for med school worth it if I come from a low-income background?

Hi everyone, I’m seriously considering applying to medical school in the near future, but I come from a low-income family and the thought of taking on hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt is really overwhelming. I recently came across the military HPSP (Health Professions Scholarship Program) and it seems like a potential way out of that financial burden.

That said, I’ve been reading that it might be harder to match into competitive specialties through the military route due to more limited residency spots. I want to have the freedom to choose my specialty based on what I’m passionate about, and I’m scared that going this route could restrict that.

Has anyone here gone through the military scholarship route or seriously considered it? Would you say it’s worth it financially and professionally? Would you do it again? I just want to make a smart choice for my future, especially coming from a background where I don’t have a financial safety net.

Any advice, personal stories, or perspectives would be really appreciated. Thank you!
