Trip report, Knife Lake for the weekend
July 3 to July 6
Moose EP to Eddy Falls and back.
TLDR: hot weather, good fishing, lots of big groups, low bugs, easy firewood.
Fast weekend trip. It was hawt the whole time. Where da bugs? I didn't use any bug spray or a head net all week. There were skeets but they were minimal until 9pm ish. Wind was right in the slot 5-10 mph. Not too much not too little. The Walleye seemed to be in shallower water. Low effort 3.5mph trolling yielded dinner every night with a small red and white 15' crankbait. Lots of 9 person Boyscouts groups plugging up the portages. Never seen so many. Saw my first ever triple canoe, triple portage, 9 person group. It was a GD yard sale on all the portage entries. Probably me circa 2015. We passed 5 groups on portage on the way back out and thankfully. Snagged a 2 star South end Birch campsite and watched group after group paddle by checking for vacancy. Finding firewood was still easy and in 45 min had enough for dinner and breakfast. It isn't worth cooking only on the fire logically. But it just makes the trip better.
Can we say the unspoken rule out loud? Stop fishing in front of someone else's campsite. We had a group of 4 casting in various places for an hour within 50 yards of our campsite.
Upgraded my 06' Wenonah Spirit ii to a 2022 Wenonah MN ii for $1,800 before the trip. The speed difference was comical. No regrats. I've taken the Spirit ii on 12 trips and she's sweaty. Time to retire.
