I don't think that my family believes that I'm beautiful

This may be a strange thing to be feeling sad about, it may even be vain or self centered, but I just can't help but be bothered by it.

Just as a preface, I(22f) have a great relationship with my family

Growing up, I was quite shy and I guess "awkward looking". Think frizzy hair, braces, acne, and all. I can always remember my family making lighthearted jokes about how I dance awkwardly or have a strange sense of style, so I was never the kind of teenage girl who's family brags about how graceful or beautiful she is, although it didn't really bother me. Since moving to a city and going to college, I have gained a better grasp on who I am and my personal style, with my looks improving from my teen years as a result. My confidence has grown immensely, and I get a lot of attention from it. I know that this sounds so vain and braggy, but people I'm with always comment on how people stop to look at me, and usually when I'm out I'll get a few compliments in a day about my hair, appearance, or outfit. I've even had photographers ask me to take pictures. This has been a pretty positive experience for me, because I never experienced being treated like I was beautiful as a young girl or teen.

I date a lot and get a lot of attention from men now. I've had a few boyfriends that I've told my family about or showed pictures of, who I'd say have all been pretty handsome and successful, career or academics-wise. I started to notice that for some reason, when I show my family a picture, they are almost surprised by how they look? Or if I tell them about a good university they studied at or a cool job they have, they look at it with suspicion, as If I am lying to them or my boyfriend lied to me(mind you, I go to a top university as well). Whenever I begin a new relationship or go on a nice date, one of parents will say something like "how are you meeting all of these interesting men?". It's as if they can't tell what they would see in me. Or, if things dont work out with one of them, they imply that my standards are too high, and that I should date someone they deem more "normal"(as in average looking or with less money). I don't see why I should have to have lower standards when all of my relationships have gone well in general, sometimes things just dont work or you grow apart. I tried to ignore this, but it seems to have become a pattern.

Another thing is that when I go out somewhere with my mom or dad, people will look at me as I walk by, or men will smile/check me out. When this happens, they always act so surprised, saying something like "oh my god, why does everyone look at you? What is it? It's so strange!" Like they can't imagine why I would catch anyone's attention.

Do you guys think that this is typical?

Once again, I want to say that I'm not trying to do some sort of brag about how pretty or great I think I am. These past few years are the first time in my life where others have treated me like I'm interesting and beautiful, and I'm finally starting to believe that I am. But everytime my family does something like this, I can help but wish that they showed me that they could see the things that other people tell me that they see.

Any advice? Am I being too sensitive?
