Reasoning for why lil Wayne won’t release his Pre-Carter 3 music
Im sure this has been asked here a lot, but I couldn’t find anything to detailed answered.
There seems to be a lot of unreleased lil Wayne songs out there from prior to the C3… in the age of streaming why haven’t these songs been repackaged and released like drakes care package?
In my, and others, opinion those unreleased songs - something you forgot, killing me, amen (real rap), pray to the lord, I’m raw, one time only, never get it, need some quiet some, how can something, Scarface ect… would be considered his best work.
After the release of C6 it seems like a good time to push an album like this to jolt some life back into why everyone considered him the best rapper alive at a certain point.
So what reasons would there be not to do this?
-
To many sample clearances? Is music as profitable in the steaming age? A lot of these songs probably need major clearances and I doubt streaming is as profitable of what used to be generated when people purchased physical copies of CDs
-
Does Wayne just not want to release old music? Possible but these songs are some of his greatest works. It would help his legacy a lot to have them streaming.
-
Some some of legality with CM and Baby? The label doesn’t want to or there is some bad blood with bird man? There has to be some money that could be made off this. I can’t imagine Wayne would care to do a tour of songs made 18 years ago. That probably reduces the revenue that can be made from an official re-release. But he put no ceilings on streaming 12+ years after release?

It would be nearly impossible to go back and find and credit everyone involved in the creation of these songs and pay them out accordingly. To complicated of a contract situation and would open the label up for lawsuits for forgetting to credit and pay people. (This is my best guess at this point.)
Unfortunate. I think if Wayne did release this tracks it might be considered one of if not the best hip hop album released in the last 20 years and rejuvenate his legacy before his eventual retirement. It’s sad to me that an artist Best Work will never make it to official streaming. A generation from now kids will have no clue these songs existed unless through word of mouth from an older generation or randomly coming across them.
