Before I get started-yes, l'm a Black woman.
However, I've seen this pattern time and time again. I have plenty of male relatives and friends, and I'm also just very observant.
I feel like the reason there's so much homophobia in our community is because a lot of men were taught toxic masculinity and homophobia from an early age.

Yes, I know it's not just the Black community, but l've predominantly seen it within ours.
Many men were raised to believe they had to be hyper-masculine to be considered straight or a "real man." They were told not to cry because "boys don't cry" or "men don't cry." They were discouraged from doing anything seen as "less manly" or "for girls," because then they'd be labeled "gay." If their voice wasn't deep, they were "gay." If they showed even the slightest bit of feminine traits—like talking with their hands or just being animated-they were "gay." That kind of mindset teaches boys that anything outside of rigid masculinity will somehow "turn them gay."

I've even witnessed men avoid certain TV shows or movies because they genuinely believed watching them would make them gay.
This kind of upbringing also creates men who grow up depressed, angry, and emotionally stunted-because they were taught to bottle everything up, to believe their feelings didn't matter. I'll never forget my cousin trying to open up to his dad about being depressed, and his dad simply replying, "No, you're not." Another family member yelled at his son just for saying he liked the color pink. I recently saw a woman trending on TikTok who said she doesn't let her sons watch her do her hair or make up cause she believes it’ll make them “gay”.

I had a few male friends, and a cousin-who liked playing with dolls because it sparked their imagination. But adults around them immediately assumed, "They're gonna wind up gay if they keep playing with those." Fast forward years later: all three are straight, and one of them is now a film writer-because his parents let him explore his creativity. I used to think it was just a generational thing (I was born in '95), but even my little brother tells me stories that prove this mindset is still very much alive.

I know I just said a mouthful, but I needed to paint the full picture.

My overall point is this: I feel like many Black men were robbed of the chance to just be kids and just be human-all because of the toxic masculinity and homophobia deeply rooted heavily in our community. If we want real change, we need to raise the next generation of boys differently. We need to teach them that it's okay to cry, to express emotion- that it doesn't make them weak.

Bottling things up only causes long-term damage.

Being soft-spoken or not the most hyper manliest doesn't make you "less of a man," and it definitely doesn't make you gay. And most importantly, we need to stop teaching boys to live in fear of other people's opinions.

An opinion that’ll have me like this
