Question about running Agianst the Giants

So im running a group (new players when we started) through the Tales from the Yawning Portal adventures and we have gotten to Against the Giants.

My question, what exactly is the goal the Players should be trying to achieve here? Are they supposed to kill the chief in each outpost? Negotiate? Simply gather information? Reading through the adventure it seems a little unclear to me what their end goal is.
