I'm thinking about getting married to my current boyfriend and my dad burst out into tears.
Hi guys. I'm young, so obviously my father is worried I'm going to ruin my life like he did (his words). I turn 18 years old in October and my boyfriend is currently in the Army. He just joined and finishes basic training in December (week before Christmas). He already has bought the ring and plans to propose sometime when he gets back. Of course, I'm excited to get married and I'm a very well off student. I have some money saved up from my last job, I'm getting a car sometime in September-November, and a new job as well. I'm going to go to school for nursing, bump up to MedSurg, then eventually a surgeon (cardio). I go to church every Sunday and will continue to do so. My boyfriend ALSO goes to church at the Fort. These are our lifetime-career goals. We are both set to do such. My father on the other hand, is very against any idea of me moving away. Yes, I am sort of a daddy's-girl, always grew up spoiled in the ways he could spoil me, so there could be some connection there. Currently, I've been going steady with my boyfriend for 1 year and 4 months (5 tomorrow), and we've only had one major problem but we resolved it.
To my dad's point of view- he got married young (18) because he thought you just pick someone out and that's it, that's your person! My grandparents got married at 17 and 18 years old, so he got it from that. He ended up marrying her for about 3 years and then FINALLY ended it. She was a liar, cheater, and was a complete manipulator. It took him a long time to move on, engaged another woman, she left (moved back to her Country), and then met my mother. They married for about 4 years and she ended up cheating and he left her. That's my father's experience with women. I love my dad to death, but I will tell him straight up once I'm an adult, I'm going. I have to experience more for my career instead of staying where we are. That is getting married or not, I will have to move for my career. It genuinely hurts hearing him sob, he's never cried before in front of me (excluding my brother's funeral). But I hear him SOBBING downstairs. I feel terrible but it's my life. I want to stay strong for my future and I love my family, but I have to leave eventually.
I believe I'm doing the right thing by marrying my boyfriend and going with him for both of our careers, but is it not? I'm a very anxious soul, so now I'm scared because of how my dad burst out. I'm not moving onto my man because I want to harm my family, but he and my grandparents seem a little against him (him the most). Please help. Or at least some advice.
