Advice for a potential trip to UP Michigan early October

My boyfriend and I are thinking of going somewhere in UP Michigan for our anniversary in early October. Would like to hear some advice for some great towns to stay in, hotels/campgrounds, and sight seeing. Any help would be great because we are not from the area. Thank you!
