How do you play this game 😭

Ive just started twewy (ds) for the first time and im only on day 4 so maybe its something ill get the hang of but im so bad at the combat 😭 Even on easy difficulty. How the hell do you do the combos with shiki i feel like shes always getting interrupted by something and i never feel like the d pad combos ever work .. Am i Stupid
