The Strategies for Handling N-Manipulation make ME feel like a Manipulator. What’s wrong with me?
I've been living in a trailer (without a toilet, running water or heat/AC and only a small extension cord to plug in a lamp for power) on my nDad's property out in the middle of nowhere for the past 6 months, while I studied for a licensing exam and passed it. He is building a giant house out here with three stories and four bedrooms. He has power, water, a shower, a toilet, a tv -- everything. I'm shitting in a bucket.
I am SO CLOSE to being free, as I just received a job offer for a really great position two hours away. I've managed to keep a cool head for the past 6 months, telling myself this is temporary and that I will have freedom very soon. Even when he tries to humiliate me for my situation.
However, the closer I get to freedom, the more my dad exerts control and dominance. He writes down every time I go to town to get food or do laundry in his planner. He even writes my supposed "reasons" for the weekly trip, for what reason I have no idea. I am not allowed to have a miniature fridge (which we have the power for, but he claims it's too many watts) and only have access to my food during the hours of 9 am to 5 pm, because he locks up the area where the fridge is in the house. When I protested he told me I needed to learn how to live with a little inconvenience. I'm SHITTING IN A BUCKET.
We got into a little tiff the other day because he said I "never take his advice", and he cut me off from the power so I was outside in the trailer with no lights, no fan (because it's 95 degrees out where I live, even in the evening), and no way to charge my phone.
At that point I sort of just lost the will to pretend anymore. I smile and nod because I can't afford to piss him off, but I've always felt weird about placating him like that. I know that the gray rock strategies and whatnot work, and they have an abundance of research and anecdotal evidence behind them. But I'm having trouble reconciling the fake persona I have to exude, with the fact that I pride myself on being an authentic person. I've always found solace, no matter what I've been through, in the fact that I'm a good person. And yet to avoid my dads manipulative tactics I have to... manipulate him?
Somebody help me look at this differently because it's making me feel like I'm no better than him. As I smile and nod and pretend he's right, and all I can think is "you are such an arrogant jerk." I want to scream "you are an arrogant jerk!" And I know that won't get me anywhere, but damn it would feel so good to speak the truth.
How do we outsmart a manipulator without feeling like we are doing the exact same thing to THEM?
