I (24f) and my boyfriend (28m) started a relationship freshly after his separation. Anyone else been in this situation?

Warning: this is a long one. I met my boyfriend at work a year and a half ago, I didn’t realize the entire time that he had a crush on me. I honestly thought he was silently judging me and didn’t think I belonged there lol. He told me later that he was too nervous/shy to talk to me because he thought I was so gorgeous; but he started warming up to me the more I tried to be friendly with him and make basic conversation. Well he eventually asked for my number and I denied, because I thought since we worked together it might be weird…yet, I gave him my Snapchat lol. We started talking, and he admitted to me that he’s MARRIED (31f). My jaw dropped to the floor. Because at this point I really liked him, and realized, I thought, he liked me. He said he had been wanting to tell me but every time he seen me he got lost in my eyes and was so afraid to tell me. He said he wanted me to know, because it wasn’t fair for me to be in the dark. Although he informed me it was not a good marriage. She was physically, mentally, and emotionally abusive (this was later confirmed), so he was not happy and didn’t want to be there, but he was stuck in the idea that he HAD to stay because it was a marriage. He had tried on multiple occasions to get her to get help and try to work it out, but it never happened. He said he didn’t realize how much he would end up liking me, and he realized he didn’t want to try anymore in his marriage if she wouldn’t try, and sadly he had considered a much darker way out…if you can piece that together. Then he met me. So I told him I was open to seeing him if he truly knew he didn’t want to be with his wife anymore and I was not the cause of their separation. He confirmed, so I agreed to a date. So we hung out at my house for about an hour and then went out for lunch. When we were sitting down to eat, he told me “I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think I love you.” and honestly, I felt the same. We had an immediate connection and mutual attraction, so I wasn’t weirded out. So, the next day he told his wife he was ready for a divorce. That didn’t go well. She tried to uh, guilt him into staying by…trying to leave her life early. But that only confirmed he didn’t need to be there. So he went forward with the separation and with his relationship with me. It went so well, he was so happy and I was so happy. We were absolutely best friends and couldn’t stand being away from each other. For reference, my boyfriends mother passed away about 6 years ago, and there was a small bracelet she had given him and he had it put away because it was special to him and he didn’t want anyone else to wear it; until he decided he wanted me to have it. He said he seen his future in me and I was the person he belonged with. He would always say we belonged together. Well, about 3 months into our relationship we moved in together, because we couldn’t stand being apart. I had even quit my job so I could stay home and take care of the house and our dogs. He even said if he could, he would’ve proposed to me if he wasn’t still in his separation. It’s now 3 months later into us living together, so 6 months total of us being together. He started getting distant out of nowhere, emotionally detached. I tried to get him to talk to me but he never would, which was odd because he was always so good with communication and making sure we were always okay and on the same page mentally and emotionally. We took care of each other. Now he’s someone completely different. It was such a sudden shift that I had considered even a possible mental disorder like bipolar disorder, but he finally came clean about 2 weeks later to me and admitted he re-enlisted in the military (he was previously a Marine for 4 years) and he didn’t know if he could be with me anymore. He said it was “too good” and he never got to heal from his past relationship because he immediately went into his relationship with me. I tried to be understanding and listen to him, even if it was breaking my heart. He told me he had talked to his ex, and told her that he was taking a step back from me and he wanted to talk to her about their relationship and try to heal from it. Essentially she thought he wanted to get back together, and he admitted he had considered it to make things “easier” even if he knew nothing would change, and that he’s never been happier than he is with me. He’s just so confused right now and essentially wants to run away, which is why he is going back into the military. I told him I love him with all my heart and I will always be here for him but, I need all of him, not part of him. He said he couldn’t give me all of him right now, so I asked him straight up if he wanted to work this out or if he wanted to just break things off…he decided it was best for us to break up. I am absolutely devastated, as I never thought this would happen, as he always made me feel like he genuinely loved me. I’ve never felt this way before with anyone. Not only was I able to love him, but I felt the love returned…until now. I’ve been so upset I am physically sick. Thankfully I have a wonderful mother who I was able to talk to, and crazy enough, she went through the exact same situation with the love of her life, down to the very last detail. She said about 2 weeks after he had left he started trying to come back, but she told him no because he had lost her trust and broke her heart; but he never gave up. Eventually they got back together, but she said she never fully trusted him again despite being so happy and in love with him. They did eventually get married but he sadly passed away later in their marriage. My mother even informed me that she had a friend who went through the EXACT SAME THING, she told them “give it 2 months at the most”, and guess what, the friend ended up getting back together and getting married. So I don’t know what to think. If I should wait, or just try and move on. I have this gut feeling he will be back because we were literally perfect together, and everyone said we were two peas in a pod. Best friends. So I don’t know what to think. He’s in the process of moving out right now, and I’m planning on moving closer to my mom and I’m putting in job applications so I can be independent again like I always have been until I decided I was comfortable enough to give my dependence to him. Even if we did get back together, I’m never giving up my independence again.
