"I'm not ok with how tall you are."
Well, the time finally arrived for an agreed upon visit with the nMIL this past weekend. We are LC and only strive to see her once or twice per year. This was an event we were all invited to at a neutral space with lots of people, so it was a perfect choice for dh and I because we could easily limit our time with her. Despite being strictly informed we would not visit her until this event, she did infiltrate our home town twice leading up to it, traveling several hours to try and force extra visits, but happily, she was thwarted. The day we saw her, she had managed to find my husband while I wasn't with him and they made small talk as I was walking up. It was a semi formal event and I had chosen a very flowy, beautiful linen pant suit and 4 inch heels that day to wear. My mother in law has never seen me dressed that way in the 33 years she's known me ... these are not normal wardrobe items for me at all but I felt comfortable and confident in them ... so she stopped what she was doing and looked me up and down several times before a look of distaste came across her face. I gave her a tiny hug as I approached and she said, "Oh good! You came out to see me before I had to force dh to find you and force you to come out." Then she turned and chatted with friends of hers and didn't spend the time she had with us actually visiting us. So I chatted with one of MIL'S friends instead for a few minutes. Then MIL rejoined our group and looked at me disgustingly again and said, "You seem awfully tall." I replied that I am, and pulled up a flowy pant leg to flash my heels. She said, "Oh my! Im actually jealous. I always wanted to be tall but just never bought the shoes." But she still wore a look of disdain on her face. Just then some good friends came up and the ladies were complimenting me on the pantsuit and being very gracious, while MIL just stood to the side and looked me up and down again with her sour face. There was a light hearted moment when one of the ladies took a picture of our feet in our heels because we had matching toe nails and it just seemed to irk MIL to no end. So when these friends walked away, MIL pulled me to the side and said, "I have to demand that you throw your new shoes out as soon as this event is over." Confused, I asked, "Excuse me?" She replied, "I insist you throw them out. I'm not ok with how tall you are. It's not ok with me." I laughed in her face and said, "No. I'm keeping them." Right at that point some people wanted to take photos with just dh and I but, you guessed it, nMIL ran into the frame and awkwardly inserted herself in every picture with us. She busied herself talking with others after that, so dh and I just walked away without saying goodbye. Our interaction with her was just 15 minutes and we didn't see her again. So for all her fuss and moaning that she was desperate to visit us and spend time with us, this was what she chose to do with the time we had with her. Dh and I say that definitely counts as one of our visits regardless and now she'll have to wait months again because that's all the emotional bandwidth we have for her.
