AIO, my parents are coddling my adult sister.
I (21 f) and my older sister (27 f) don’t have the best relationship. I don’t really care to improve it at this point. All I want is to be left to my own doings, but I remain cordial and not rude out of respect for my parents and to save face.
Anyways my issue is my parents would have me inconvenience myself, take disrespect and stay silent to protect her feelings and I hate it. I can explain it best by just giving examples:
-
Without me knowing and definitely never asking my sister bought some odd and very niche pancake mix. When she told me abt it and how she was going to make it for me on my birthday (like I had no say in the matter) I was clearly not excited but my mom gave me a look that said just go with it. Come time for me to eat them, and they’re off. From the taste to the texture. Drowning them in syrup only did so much for the taste but worsened the texture. The eggs along with it also were not great. I can cook and well at that, I planned to make myself something to eat for breakfast, but couldn’t because of her insistence on making me something I didn’t even want.

My family had an event to go to, everyone knew what time we were supposed to leave. My sister, who has bad time management skills (a trait my mother also shares so possibly why she insists on sparing her feelings), started getting ready late. Approaching the time to leave, I am ready and just eating leftovers as my dad and I wait for my mom and sister. In the middle of me eating, my sister asks me to warm up some food for her too since she was still getting ready. I oblige and start dishing the food. My mom seeing what I was doing, complains about me not adding meat to the dish. I add it warm it for her and bring it to the car after barely getting to finish my own food. The first thing my sister does when I pass her the bowl is complain about portion size. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t the biggest, but it was by no means small. But she complains this is her first meal of the day and she’s hungry. Before I can even rebuttal, my mom pinches me, silencing me, and then says nothing to my sister as she scoffs.
There are many other times where things like this have happened. Any form of protest or responses from me matching the energy of the situation are met with long lectures and conversations of being accommodating to my sister. Even in many situations where she has been dead wrong, my parents would stay silent because she has a hard time understanding when she’s wrong and to spare her feelings. Where I take issue is the fact that I was nothing to do with this coddling behavior but feel like I’m being forced to a lot of the time.
Previously I didn’t have to deal with it as much because my sister didn’t live with us. But she recently moved back in. I was going to put up with it since I’m going back to school soon, but I feel like she may be living with us for far longer than I’m anticipating. Is this as ridiculous as it sounds to me? Do I need to call my parents and more specifically my mom out? Or am I dragging it, and I need to just suck it up?
I can provide more example if needed, I just didn’t want this post to be any longer.
