"The only music I hear now is kids' music"

RANT

You hear this a lot from moms with young children. They say things like the only TV shows they watch now are kids shows, and the only music they listen to is kids music. But, like, why?? Why are your kids controlling the radio/computer/TV?

Yes, of course you will hear those things because your kids consume that content and you're around it, but why are these tiny little tyrants dictating everything? Let them watch a kids movie and you can go into another room and watch what you want.

This phenomenon just wasn't the case when I was a child (my childhood was in the 90s). Yes, my mom has fond memories of certain movies and shows that I would watch, but she also would watch shows and movies that she enjoyed. If she was watching something, there was no concept of her stopping midway because her kids wanted to watch something different. We would have to wait until she was done. What happened to this?

She listened to certain music in the car that she enjoyed, and a lot of that was when my brother and I were in the car with her, because guess what, the world didn't revolve around us and she was the one driving.

Yes, once during a 2nd grade field trip she played the same tape the whole drive there and back (a couple of hours) because my friend and I insisted we wanted to hear it. But other times, she would play the music she preferred.

What happened to balance?

A friend of mine said that her kids "won't let her" watch or listen to anything that she wants because they would interrupt her...what is this idea of kids "not letting" the parents do something?

It seems kids just rule the house these days and it's pretty terrifying.
