Family Internet bill Skyrocketed, what are my options?
Hey r/Winnipeg,
I'm helping my dad with his internet, and we just got a shocking bill from Shaw: $140 for 1Gbps! We unfortunately missed the contract end date, but this new price feels incredibly high.
We're really hoping to bring that monthly cost down significantly without sacrificing too much speed. We're not necessarily tied to 1Gbps if there's a better deal at a slower speed, and going over 1Gbps isn't an option without overhauling our home's older CAT 5e cabling.
With 5 of us in the house, including general browsing and TV streaming, frequent large downloads or usage (games, high-res streaming), and a home server rack setup we need something that would suit all the use cases.
Looking for your best advice on:
Shaw Retention/Loyalty? Any recent success getting better "value plans" or promos for existing customers?
Third-Party ISPs? How's the performance with providers like TekSavvy (which seems to be one of the few available to us after a quick check)? What's the switching process and overall experience like?
Door-to-Door Deals? Are those big discount 2-year contracts still around from door-to-door salespeople? When do they generally come around?
Not against changing ISPs like going over to Bell/MTS at all, Any and all recent experiences, or provider recommendations would be incredibly helpful!
Thanks so much, Winnipeg!
