The drivers of a BMW M2 and a Porsche 911 GT3 RS were unbelievably lucky to escape with their lives after being involved in a horrific crash at the Nürburgring last Saturday. Both cars were completely destroyed. The collision occurred during a tourist driving session on the fastest section of the track. The Porsche was launched into the air, and both vehicles went up in flames.

Surveillance footage and a cockpit video from the Porsche, which was published on YouTube, show the 911 driver attempting to overtake the BMW on the left. The M2 driver clearly misjudges the situation and veers to the left.

The cars collide at high speed, the drivers lose control, and crash violently into the guardrail. The 911 becomes airborne, and the impact causes the Porsche’s fuel tank to explode in a massive fireball.

The entire front section of the GT3 RS is torn off in the crash, with suspension and body parts scattered across the track. The M2 fares little better, its front end is crushed and several body panels are missing.

By some miracle (and thanks to the obvious engineering of BMW and especially Porsche), both drivers escaped the incident without serious injuries, according to Road & Track.

Who is at fault?
Based on the video above, it’s difficult to say who’s at fault. One could argue that the BMW driver didn’t leave enough room for the Porsche to overtake or simply didn’t realize an overtaking maneuver was underway. On the other hand, it could be argued that the GT3 RS driver should have exercised more caution, given the risks associated with that section of the track.
