Saw Italy is Opening 500k Non-EU Work Visas; Considering Options
Hey everyone,
My wife and I (35m/31f) are from the US and are looking at the option to move to Italy after learning about the opening of non-EU work visas. We have a fairly comfortable living currently in the US, but both the allure of the dolce vita and the opportunity to live and work elsewhere is calling, considering both the current US political landscape, and the high cost of living here.
We both are native English speakers. I speak Italian (A2/B1), am fluent in Spanish, and am learning German (A1/A2) and French (A1).
Our Background & Job Search
- My wife is an executive & personal assistant to a C-suite level executive. She has a background in administration.
- I have a Associate's degree in Computer Networking, with 7 years' experience in information technology in both remote and on-site support roles (my current being 5 years on-site).
- Unfortunately, I assume my lack of fluency in Italian may prevent me from taking on a desktop/systems support role onsite, and would make it difficult to work in a remote support role. I would prefer a bilingual role, if possible, but can pick up Italian easily through immersion, as my mother tongue is Spanish.
Financial Situation & Planning
We only have around €10,000 saved, so this whole plan depends heavily on whether I can find a job, and figuring out how the process would work to find work, relocate, and be sponsored for a work visa in Italy. I do receive US Veterans Affairs disability compensation at about €22,000 a year, which would supplement my income.
We’re not sure where we want to live yet. I've visited Rome and Milan, and would be very comfortable in Roma; I have found a couple Lazio IT jobs that pay in the vicinity of €35,000 annually.
Looking for Advice!
I’d be super grateful for any general tips or suggestions, but most importantly:
- How can we best earn money in Italy? Any job ideas we might have overlooked?
- Which cities would you recommend for us in terms of job opportunities and cost of living?
- Any insights from people who have done something similar?
I’ve just begun doing research, and I figured I’d ask to hear from people who have first-hand experience (: Thanks in advance for any advice!
