Fishing on the switch help

What do y'all recommend I do to get better at fishing??? I haven't caught a single fish without the training rod. I'm on year 7 and have lvl 1 fishing 💔 is it this hard even on PC? Because I fear I'm willing to make the jump atp. (I clearly might just have a skill issue 💔)
