¿What horror movies should I see to fully enjoy the Scary Movie franchise?

Not sure if this is the place to ask for this, but since I'm searching for the actual horror movies I think it is.

¿What horror movies should I see to fully enjoy the Scary Movie franchise? I know there are more important films like Scream or The Ring that are referenced a lot of times and it's an important part of the plot, but some other movies are only referenced like in a sentence or so, and it's only a small joke. Which ones should I definitely watch, which ones are optional and which ones aren't worth it?

I would also like to know, if you are horror movie enjoyers, what do you think of horror parodies?
