Do you think that a Kurt Cobain biopic would be insensitive?
Nirvana was the face of 90s Rock. While there were many great Alternative Rock bands from that era, none would be the trailblazers that they were and they ushered in an era, where Alt Rock at large could thrive. Yet he's not gotten a single biopic. David Bowie, The Beatles, Elton John and more all have biopics. Walk The Line, A Complete Unknown, Love And Mercy. Tons of celebrities with their own movies and yet Kurt hasn't gotten a single one. Last Days doesn't count.
The only other celebrity I've seen this amount of caution around a biopic for is Amy Winehouse, when her Back To Black biopic was coming out. And it's not because Kurt was known as especially cruel or malicious, where it would make people feel sour about him getting his shine. Guy is still praised to the fucking moon. I think it's just because he was so relatable and his story so tragic, that it would be hard to authentically recreate that emotion. He's a touchstone for many young music fans, even today.
It would feel hollow to watch some Hollywood star; grow out his hair, throw on a cardigan and pretend to carry the burden of Kurt's thoughts, especially if they wanted to touch upon his death. In the same way that it felt empty for Amy, when Marisa Abela wore a beehive and started trying to convey her struggles with addiction.
It can be done right though, another tragic story is one of Ian Curtis of Joy Division. Control is one of the few biopics that I would call great. It was done by Anton Corbijn and it offers a bleak ambiance to the troubling history of the frontman, with Sam Riley carrying a heavy performance that I think holds the weight and power needed to convey such a heavy story. You can convey true human emotions, the problem is that it'd become such a phenomenon and Hollywood is so monopolized, that I doubt they would actually have someone that would respect Kurt, like Anton and Sam did for Ian.
