How do you actually take and occupy a hive city ?

Hive cities are these massive structures with hundreds of millions up to billions of people in them, how would an enemy army actually invade and occupy one? There are a thousand ways to hide, plan ambushes and organise resistance movement in them, unless you plan to only take small sections of one or you just nuke the thing a hive city seems genuinely untoldable.
