How do you deal with the feeling of absolute unworthiness due to no passion, no interests, no hobbies?
(edites with chatgpt for grammar) Lately, I’ve been feeling really anxious—like, random anxiety attacks out of nowhere. It’s hard to explain but I constantly feel like I’m falling behind in life and not enough.
For some context: I’m a 25-year-old guy living in Canada, working a decent-paying IT job. From childhood, I was conditioned to focus only on studies. No sports, no hobbies, no creative outlets. We were financially struggling, and I was the only hope to uplift the family, so everything else felt like a luxury. I don’t blame my parents—they did their best—but it meant I never really got to live outside of academics.
Then COVID hit during college, and I basically spent 3 years stuck at home. After that, I moved abroad for my master’s, juggled classes, part-time jobs, and chores—again, no space to explore myself. Now, I have a stable job, but I look around and feel like everyone else is so full—they have passions, hobbies, talents. And I… don’t. Outside of work and hitting the gym, I feel like I’m just… blank.
This hit me even harder after I got into a relationship. My girlfriend is amazing—talented, expressive, full of life. She sings, dances, plays guitar, knows thousands of movies and songs. She’s happy and whole in ways I feel I’m not. I truly love her and want a future with her, but lately I’ve started feeling unworthy of her. Like I have nothing to bring to the table emotionally or creatively. Just a guy who worked hard all his life but never learned how to live.
I was fine being single—ignorance was bliss, I guess. But being with someone so vibrant makes me painfully aware of all the things I missed out on. It’s starting to affect my self-esteem and peace of mind.
Has anyone else been through this? How do you cope with feeling like you’ve missed a part of life, or like you’re not “enough” outside of work?
