What to tell a doctor
Hi all! Im new to this community, but i am really struggling to feel confident when going to the doctor.
For context, im 19 and i have scoliosis. Im fused from T3-L3 (2 curves, ~ 70° each), i got the surgery when i was about 11 years old and ever since then ive been in pain. Its sort of changed over the years, originally i was just getting pain under my shoulder blades, but now im getting that (though less frequently), as well as pain in nearly all my joints.
My bones are constantly crackling, and my shoulders, arms, and knees constantly pop and occasionally feel like theyre "out of place". I dont think ive ever dislocated a joint, but this pain is FREQUENT. Especially in my knees and hips. I work at amazon and the 10 hour shifts are becoming unbearable.
Heres the interesting part: my mother had some genetic testing done a while ago, and they found that she had the genetics for a varient of Ehlers Danlohs (vEDS). We both have nearly the exact same lifelong symptoms. But, neither of us are hypermobile or have ever dislocated a joint. So, when we go to the doctor, and bring up EDS we're always turned away. Im getting genetic testing done myself soon to hopefully get my own answers and find a doctor who will give a shit.
I guess im just worried about what will happen when i finally see a rheumatologist. I have a referral for one, and im waiting to be scheduled. Im worried i'll go and that i wont have the genetic results yet, and that i'll be laughed at. Im worried that i may be misdiagnosed with something like fibromyalgia (not to say that it would be wrong to diagnose me with this, but im afraid of getting this as a diagnosis and then everything else being invalidated). I have no idea what could be wrong with me, it really could be any number of things and i feel like every medical professional i see thinks im faking, or just doesnt know what to do with me. The amount of times ive sat in an exam room on the brink of tears explaining my symptoms, and ive just been stared at as if they dont even want to investigate whats wrong with me... i dont know. Im very nervous to see this rheumatologist when i get the chance to.
