I analyzed 50+ vintage Nike tags (from the '80s to the 2000s). Here’s a guide to dating them.

Hey everyone,

I've spent countless hours sourcing vintage pieces and one of the most common questions I see is about dating Nike stuff. The tag is everything. So, I decided to consolidate my research into a guide for the community. Hope this helps you on your next hunt.

The '80s: The Blue Tag & The First Grey Tag

  • Blue Tag (Early-Mid '80s): Characterized by the "pinwheel" logo and a simple design. The font is clean. "Made in USA" is a common feature.
  • First Grey Tag (Late '80s): This is where it gets interesting. The tag is light grey, often with a red Swoosh. The key detail is the clean, minimalist look. The size is often displayed prominently next to the main logo.

The '90s: The Golden Era of Tags

  • Silver/White Tag (Early-Mid '90s): This is the most iconic one. It's often larger, with a black Swoosh and lots of text. The key giveaway is the blocky, almost computerized font for the sizing and materials. If it feels like it was designed on Windows 95, you're probably in the right decade.
  • Red & Grey Tag (Mid-Late '90s): A variation of the silver tag, often seen on sportswear and ACG lines. The red Swoosh is vibrant.

The 2000s: The Modernization

  • Thinner Silver/Grey Tag (Early 2000s): The tags become thinner and more rectangular. The font is cleaner and more modern. You'll start to see more "Made in..." various Asian countries.
  • The "Team Sports" Tag: Often found on athletic wear, this tag is wider and includes the "Nike Team Sports" logo.

This is just a starting point, of course. There are tons of variations. What are some of the weirdest or coolest vintage tags you've come across? Let's discuss in the comments.
